A dark rocky outcrop is the setting for the action here - on the reels you’ll see 8 different gemstone-style symbols. The best of these is the red star which awards 15, 30, 50 or 75 coins if you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 in combination. Winning combinations are created by landing matching symbols on adjacent reels.
After a winning spin, the successful gemstones burst into flames and are removed from the reels and new symbols drop into replace them. A new payout calculation is then made. These symbol drop cascades keep on coming as long as a new winning combination is created. This is known as the Dropdown Wins feature.
Things improve still further if you manage to get on a roll with your symbol drop wins - land 2 in a row and you’ll be awarded a Gem Rock which is a 2x2 cluster of identical symbols. Land 5 wins in a row and you’ll get a 3x3 Gem Rock. If you’re lucky enough to see 9 successive symbol drop wins, you’ll be awarded a massive 4x4 Gem Rock. Land a Gem Rock and you’re guaranteed a winner. This is known as the Gem Rocks feature.
That’s pretty much it as far as gameplay goes - there aren’t any free spins or other features on offer here. Thankfully, the symbol drop wins keep the pace consistently high. The Gem Rock clusters are a nice addition in place of the usual multipliers that are often found in cascading reel slot games.
Like most titles from Yggdrasil Gaming, the design in Gem Rocks is impressive. The visuals are as bold and sharp as we’ve come to expect. The cascading reels game engine is a bit of a departure from their normal offering but it works pretty well.
It might not be the most innovative slot game we’ve seen from Yggdrasil Gaming but Gem Rocks is a simple enjoyable game.
