Zoom Slot

Swedish developer Thunderkick is best known for its lavishly designed, quirkily themed slot games. In Zoom, they've taken the good old fashioned fruity and given it a reboot. It's a 6 reel, 64 ways to win title that comes with a healthy sprinkling of wilds and expanding Zoom symbols with re-spins.

Whether it's conveyor belts in Sunny Scoops or floating symbols in Fruit Warp, Thunderkick likes to mix things up as far as game engines go - that's the case in Zoom which is played out on a highly unusual 6 reel, 64 ways to win machine. If that's a little unorthodox, the imagery is reassuringly familiar. Look out for the usual array of fruity favourites including cherries, lemons, melons, grapes, bells and lucky 7s. The top payer of the standard symbols is the star. They're joined by a wild which does all the usual stuff, replacing everything bar the scatter.

So far then, so standard. The big wrinkle in Zoom is the Re-spin feature - you'll notice that the reels are divided into 6 different 2x2 sections. If a Z symbol lands and then expands to fill that 2x2 section of the reels, it will create a Massive Symbol and you'll be awarded a re-spin.

It's possible to create Super Massive Symbols but covering 4x4 regular symbols – you will also get re-spins. If you get 3 Massive Symbols on the 6 reels, you will automatically benefit from 6-of-a-kind wins on the re-spin which can lead to wins of up to 1,500 times your bet!

The gameplay here is super simple - there aren't any traditional free spins or other extras on offer. Everything centres on the Zoom re-spins. Luckily, they come along at regular enough intervals so you won't be hanging on for ages to hit something.

The design isn't as elaborate as we've seen in some Thunderkick powered slot games (yes, Esqueleto Explosivo, we're looking at you!) but it's still well above what you'll find from many less image conscious developers. Trying to do something fresh with an old fruit machine format isn't the easiest thing to do well - in Zoom, Thunderkick has given it a pretty good stab.

If you like plenty of bonus rounds and features, then this re-boot probably won't appeal. If you like simple, hypnotic gameplay and quality design then Zoom, with apologies to Fat Larry's Band, does more than enough to make your heart go boom!
