Like most slot games in the Play ’N Go catalogue, the design here is excellent. The reels are set within ruined marbled columns and watched over by an ancient deity. On the reels you’ll see helmets, lightning bolts and tridents as well as the faces of Zeus, Poseidon and Hades which each pay 10 times your stake if you land 5 on a payline. There’s also a wild that pays up to 50 times your total stake.
After a successful spin, the winning symbols are dropped in to replace them. These continue as long as a new winning combination is created. Each tumbling win also increases a multiplier. Hand of God feature - this can trigger at random on any losing spin. You’ll receive 1 of the following modifiers. Which 1 you get depends on which god is active to the right of the reels:
- Hades - all instances of 1 chosen symbol transform into another symbol.
- Poseidon – 1 or 2 wilds are added.
- Zeus – 2 sets of symbols are removed from the grid to create a new tumble.
Wrath of Olympus feature - land winning combinations made up of the 3 god symbols to fill up the meter to the side of the reels. Once a meter if full, 1 free spin is awarded. The 3 Hand of God modifiers hit in turn on this free spin and subsequent tumbles.
Free Spins feature - these are triggered if you manage to clear the whole of the grid. You’ll then have the pick of 3 free spin rounds. Choosing Hades, Poseidon or Zeus will get you 4, 5 or 8 free spins respectively. Each round is played with its associated Hand of God modifier which hits following a losing free spin. The multiplier isn’t reset between free spins either and can boost payouts by up to 20x.
Fully charge the meter and you can add more free spins to your total – there’s up to 20 free spins to be won altogether. Clear the grid during the free spins and a bonus of 100 times your stake is on offer.
Rise of Olympus isn’t for the faint of heart as far as variance is concerned. This is a super volatile slot game so expect feast or famine – it does offer payouts of 5,000 times your stake if you manage to get the best possible combination with a 20x multiplier.
If you can cope with the potentially enormous swings, then there’s much to like here. It’s well designed and comes with a good range of extras. The appetite for all things ancient shows no sign of slowing. If you like the ancient theme and sky-high volatility, then Rise of Olympus could be for you.
