We've come to expect Yggdrasil Gaming powered slots to feature great design and that's certainly the case in Double Dragons - set against a mountainous backdrop, the action centres on 2 dragons, 1 red and 1 blue. The reels include lower value playing card suits alongside a quartet of dragon eyes.
Double Dragons is played using a Dropdown Win feature - also known as tumbling or cascading reels, whenever you land a winning combination, the successful symbols will be blasted away and the symbols above will drop into their place.
To the left of the reels, you'll notice a meter - after every Dropdown Win, this will increase by 1. After 4 successive Dropdown wins, you'll trigger the Double Dragons feature. 2 giant stacked wilds will fly out from the meter and land on 2 reels, turning them wild. A new payout is made and the Dropdowns continue. As long as a new winner is formed, the stacked wild will carry on hitting.
There are also 2 standard wilds to look out for - as well as replacing all other symbols, the Ice Dragon and the Fire Dragon also add a little something extra. Whenever the Ice Dragon hits, Dropdown Wins will be boosted by a 2x multiplier and doubled. The Fire Dragon breathes flames to turn 2 or 3 standard symbols wild.
Every time a wild dragon lands 1 light will be added to the meter to the right of the reels. After you've collected 9 of one type of dragon, you'll trigger the Free Spins feature. Here you'll be awarded 9 free spins. Extra dragons are added to the reels during the feature, further enhancing your chances of landing something big.
We found plenty to enjoy Double Dragons - as we expected, it looks and sounds terrific. The graphics and animations are top notch with the action playing out to a soaring, movie-style backing track. Top marks as usual for the Yggdrasil Gaming designers.
The features stand up to scrutiny well too - the Dropdown Wins keep the pace flowing nicely and the stacked wilds can certainly help things along. The best opportunities come via the free spins though. They may take some time to trigger but the extra added wilds can make the wait worthwhile.
Fantasy themed slot games aren't usually a favourite of ours but Double Dragons offered more than enough to keep us interested.
