The visuals in Chicago Gangsters are terrific. The rainy streets of night time Chicago form the backdrop to the action here. Joining the A to J royal values are a glass of scotch and cigar, a 1930s car and a gangster’s moll. The best symbol is the mobster who’ll get you 10 times your total stake if you land 5 on a payline.
The silhouette of Chicago is the wild. It replaces everything bar the bonus symbol (the poker chip) and offers awards of up to 10 times your total stake per payline.
Chicago Gangsters comes with Mystery Symbols - on any spin, you could see the backs of playing cards appear on the reels. These mystery symbols all then transform into the same matching symbol and a new payout calculation is made.
The game is all about the Bonus Game feature which is triggered by landing 6 or more of the Bonus symbol on the same spin. You’ll then be awarded 3 re-spins where the reels feature blanks and Bonus symbols only. Each Bonus symbol comes with a multiplier value attached.
This can be anything from between 1 and 24 times your stake. If a Bonus symbol lands, it’s locked in place and the re-spins reset to 3. The round continues until you’re out of re-spins. All the multiplier values are then added together and applied to your total stake.
Keep a special eye out for the blue and green poker chips which trigger the Mini or Minor Jackpots and payouts of 30 or 150 times your stake. If you manage to fill all 15 reel positions with Bonus symbols you’ll trigger the Grand Jackpot which stands at 1,000 times your stake.
We really liked Chicago Gangsters. The imagery is as good as you’ll see anywhere and the smoky, jazz age soundtrack has a suitably sleazy feel. The range of extras isn’t massive but the Mystery Symbols add some flavour to the base game. The streak spin-style Bonus Game feature is a cracker too.
As far as volatility goes, we’re in the medium range – you can win 1,353 times your stake if you win the Grand Jackpot and do well in the re-spins. This trip back to the age of Al Capone is an impressive one. If your idea of a good night in is a Godfather/Boardwalk Empire marathon, then this is the slot game for you – I would also try Chicago, from Novomatic, which has a similar feel.
