Space Race Slot

Developer Play 'N Go invites players to blast off into Space Race, a 5 reel, 20 payline video slot. Based on the battle for galactic supremacy between the USSR and the USA and the early days of space travel, it comes with free spins with extra wilds, a pick me bonus round and jackpots of 5,000 coins. Play from between 20p and £25 per spin.

Visually, Space Race is pretty simple. Set against a star-filled backdrop, the reels include a selection of space related objects including images of the Moon, the Earth, a satellite and an astronaut. They're joined by sci-fi versions of playing card symbols from A to 10. The astronaut is the top payer of the standard symbols, giving you 1,000 coins for a five symbol combination.

The meteor shower is the scatter, paying between two and 300 times your total bet if you find between two and five anywhere on the reels. The Space Race Logo is the wild, substituting for everything apart from the scatter, free spin and bonus symbols. Five wilds in a payline will earn you an impressive 5,000 coins.

Space Race comes with two main bonus features. 3 or more Warning symbols triggers the Free Spins feature and you'll be awarded 15 bonus games. Unfortunately these can't be re-triggered. On the plus side, the Warning symbol becomes an extra wild for the duration of the feature.

The second feature is a novel variation on an old favourite, the pick me round. You'll need to find 3 spacecraft bonus symbols to trigger this. You'll then be presented with a grid - pick a square to position your spacecraft. There will then be a meteor shower. Avoid the space debris and you'll win a prize and go on to the next level. The grids get progressively smaller and the payouts bigger with the biggest wins on offer if you manage to land your ship on the Moon.

Space Race isn't the most elaborate slot you'll come across - the visuals have a slight retro flavour and though simply done, work rather well. The free spins round is tricky to trigger but can deliver some decent results thanks to the extra wild symbols. The other bonus feature takes a simple premise and gives it a nice twist.

You probably won't be filled with awe playing Space Race. It's a solid little performer though, combining good sound and visuals with a decent array of features. Get lucky in the free spins and there's a chance you'll rocket off with plenty of coins. I much prefer other space-themed slots like WMS’ Star Trek Red Alert or Microgaming’s Battlestar Galactica.
