Gemix Slot

Looking more like a smartphone app in the mould of Candy Crush than a traditional slot, Gemix is a hypnotic little offering from developer Play 'N Go. Played out on a 7x7 reel set, the aim is to make groups of 5 or more gemstones of the same colour. Helping you along the way are tumbling reels and a quartet of special features that destroy selections of symbols. Play from between 50p and £100 per spin.

The reels contain 8 brightly coloured gemstones symbol. Whenever you find 5 or more of any symbol touching vertically and/or horizontally, you'll have a winner. Those successful symbols will then be zapped away and replaced by the symbols above offering another chance to win.

The tumbling reels continue as long as there's a winning combination on show. The gold star is the biggest payer, offering 500 coins if you find a combination featuring 15 or more symbols. If you find a symbol combination that has at least 20 symbols the Crystal Charge is activated and you'll receive one of four bonuses.

The Nova Blast will see one symbol explode, destroying all the adjacent gemstones. The second Crystal Charge is the Crystal Warp. Here one symbol is randomly chosen - all the other matching symbols will be destroyed and replaced. The Light Beam shoots out along a line. All the symbols that are in the path of the beam are destroyed and replaced. Finally, there's the Chain Lightning. Two corner symbols are connected by the lightning with all symbols in its path transformed into one of the corner symbols.

If you're lucky enough to win with 40 symbols before the Crystal Charge is triggered, then your payout will be boosted by a 3x multiplier and trebled.

Gemix takes place in 3 different worlds - you trigger them by matching gems in specific patterns. There are six patterns in all. Finding three of them opens up the new world with bonuses on offer.

Each world has a special set of wild symbols. They appear on non-winning spins. The miner's lamp is the wild in world one. Up to 10 of them can appear on any spin, substituting for any other symbol. The lollipop is the wild in world two, spreading from one edge of the reels to the other edge. Finally, there's the book of potions in world three - 8 of these can appear as sticky wilds on non-winning spins.

There's plenty to enjoy is this Tetris-like slot. The visuals are simple and the soundtrack is a catchy little ditty. The action flows along at a good pace thanks to the tumbling reels and Crystal Charge. The variance is on the low side of medium so there's plenty of play to be had, regardless of the size of your bankroll.

For some reason, these newer kind of slots don’t do it for me – it looks great but maybe I’m a little too traditional in that I like to see reels spin! Play ‘N Go have certainly produced much better in my opinion with the volatile Aztec Idols or Wild North highly recommended.
