The set up in Knights of Gold is a little strange. You’ll see a standard 5x3 reel set - next to that is a 5x12 machine. Winning combinations of up to 5 symbols can be created on either of them.
There’s a middle ages theme to the design here. On the reels you’ll see stylised royal symbols alongside goblets, suits of armour, banners and shields. The most rewarding symbol is the castle - land 5 of these on a line and you’ll win 20 times stake. There’s also a wild that replaces everything bar the bonus symbol.
Knights of Golds comes with a Shields Surprise Bonus feature - this pick me round is triggered by landing 3 shield symbols on either reel set. The main 5x3 machine is then filled with shields. Pick to reveal stake multipliers which are then added together and applied to your total stake. Keep picking until you land a stop.
Land the Bonus symbol on reels 2, 3 and 4 on the same spin to trigger the Free Games Bonus feature. If you land 2 bonus symbols, you’ll trigger the Bonus Symbol Respin feature where you’re awarded a respin and given a second chance to land the all-important third. Once in, you’ll then be offered the pick of the following free spins and multiplier combinations.
- 30 free spins with 1x multiplier
- 15 free spins with 2x multiplier
- 10 free spins with 3x multiplier
- 6 free spins with 5x multiplier
- 3 free spins with 10x multiplier
Before the free spins begin, pick from the 4 flags to reveal a modifier which will be in play throughout the feature:
- Wins featuring the 10, J, Q, K and A symbols are multiplied by 2x
- All 10, J, Q, K and A symbols are removed from play
- All wins containing a WILD symbol are multiplied by 2x
- The feature begins
Retriggers are possible too if you land 3 bonus symbols on the same free spin – this can lead to 60 free spins in total (with a 1x multiplier) or 6 free spins with a 10x multiplier. Now, if you choose any of the options with a 2x multiplier, this can result in free spins with a colossal 20x multiplier!
We enjoyed Knights of Gold. The visuals are simply done but very effective and the Greensleeves-style soundtrack a nice addition. The game engine is a little unusual but the gameplay quite familiar. We landed the pick me round regularly and enjoyed some good results.
We found the Free Games Bonus feature harder to come by. The multipliers and modifiers can make it worth the wait though – especially if you go for the bigger ones. The relatively high volatility and the high minimum stakes means it won’t be for everyone. If you want and olde worlde theme, good design and some interesting extras then Knights of Gold fits the bill nicely.
