Scarab Slot

Head to the land of the pyramids in Scarab, a 5 reel, 75 payline slot game from IGT. Collect special scarab symbols which then turn wild every 10th spin. There’s also a Free Spins Bonus feature where you can choose from a selection of free spin and added wild combinations. Head to the desert on all devices from between 75p and £2,250 per spin.

There’s a real brick and mortar feel to the design of Scarab. With the pyramids and the desert in the background, the royal blue reels contain lower value royal symbols plus a selection of golden hieroglyphs. The best symbol is the colourful Egyptian queen. She spins in a stacked formation and offers awards of 2.67 times your stake if you manage to land 5 in combination.

Keep a special eye out for the scarab beetle gemstone. Whenever this hits, the symbol position is edged in gold. On every 10th spin, all of the gold edged symbol positions turn wild. After that spin. the reels revert back to normal and all the gold edged positions are removed. You can keep track of how many spins you’ve had in a sequence via the meter above the reels. This is known as the Wild Stays Charges The Pays feature.

The other main extra on offer in Scarab is the Free Spins Bonus feature. This is triggered in the usual manner by landing 3 or more bonus symbols on the same spin. Once activated, you’ll be offered a selection of free spin and added wild combinations:

3 Pyramid Scatters 4 Pyramid Scatters 5 Pyramid Scatters
15 free spins with 5 wilds 30 free spins with 5 wilds 45 free spins with 5 wilds
10 free spins with 7 wilds 20 free spins with 7 wilds 30 free spins with 7 wilds
5 free spins with 10 wilds 10 free spins with 10 wilds 15 free spins with 10 wilds

On each of the options, retriggers are possible – you can retrigger up to 4 times which allows you to play with up to 225 free spins if you get 5 scatters (with 5 wilds on each free spin). Personally, I would opt for the 10 wilds option as this lead to bigger wins in theory.

The design here is bright and bold and reminded us of a live casino slot game. The features offer something a little different though thanks to the scarab wilds that become active on every 10th spin.

The Free Spins Bonus feature round isn’t bad either thanks to the wild extras. As far as variance goes, it’s low with only 200 times your stake to be won from each spin or free spin – IGT could have made the symbols for valuable for bigger win potential so it’s disappointing really.

There are already plenty of similarly themed slot games on the online casino shelves. Scarab had the potential to be great (with higher value symbols) so I’d rather play more volatile offerings such as Book of Ra Deluxe (by Novomatic) or Legacy of Egypt (by Play ‘N Go).
