There are many, many Pirate themed slot games on the market today, with varying degrees of 'Pirateyness' about them. Perhaps it's the recent boom in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise that's bought this phenomena on. The game really does play like something out of a cheesy Blackpool amusement arcade with big chunky 8 bit style graphics and a soundtrack that's right out of a ZX Spectrum game. Don't think for a moment however that this detracts from the game, as it in fact adds a kind of rough and ready feel to the game, which you'd expect from a bunch of salty, scurvy-ridden pirates. Audio-wise the game has a perpetual soundtrack of sea-travelling noises, and if you close your eyes you could be aboard a galleon with waves lapping against the side of your vessel. One of our favourite things about the games presentation, is the audio sound that accompanies the jackpot symbol, the pirate head. Every-time you stop this symbol anywhere on the reels, you'll hear a delightful 'arrgh'. There should be a gaming law that every pirate themed slot on the market should have to incorporate this noise somewhere into the machine.

The basic game plays over nine lines, with wins registering from both sides of the slot, over a five-reel format. This is one of the only slots we've come across so far with this mirrored pay-line effect, and in effect it almost doubles the number of pay lines. Bet anything from 20p per line up to £50 per line, with any number of lines from one to all nine being selectable in the game, but unfortunately the line array is not customisable.

Golden Doubloons features two bonus games. The first is activated by the scatter symbols, which take you into a great free spin game. The more symbols you scatter into play, the more spins you'll get in the free spin game. This is quite a lovely little bonus game, where you can dig up quite a bit of buried treasure as all wins are trebled during the free spin bonus.

The second bonus game is a far more pirate like affair. Roll in three dagger bonus symbols on any line to sneak on board the pirate ship whilst the captain surveys the sea-scape. Slowly steal the treasures for a multiplier on your line stake. Beware however because if you disturb the parrot you'll alert the captain and he'll throw your land-lubbing behind off the boat without so much as a piece of eight to your name.

Any win from the bonus game can be doubled in a fair game where you pick either the skull or the crossbones. Spin the wheel and wait to see the result in order to see if your symbol rolls in, and if you're in luck, me hearties, and your symbol matches the selected one then you'll win. You can repeat this game up to five times to win a whopping thirty two times your original stake.
