The Matrix Slot

Based on the classic 1999 sci-fi movie from the Wachowskis, The Matrix is a 5 reel, 50 payline slot game from Playtech. Available on all devices, it comes with high spec sound and visuals as well as some cracking features including 2 free spins rounds where sticky wilds and added matching symbols are in play. Stakes range from 50p to £500 per spin.

The visuals in the slot game version of The Matrix are very similar to the source movie. Set against a black backdrop with cascading lines of digital code, the reels include letters as well as sunglasses, telephones and three members of the cast. You’ll see Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) spinning around the reels (but no Keanu Reeves).  Very impressive it all looks too.

There’s also a standard wild which is joined by a second wild, the black cat. The black cat is also central to the first feature we’ll look at, the Deja Vu Shuffle feature - fill the whole of reel 5 with wild black cats to trigger this. The stacked wild then duplicates itself on reel 1. All the symbols are shuffled and a new payout with the extra wilds in play is made.

The Matrix also comes with 2 free spins features which are triggered by landing the free spins symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 on the same spin. You’ll then be offered the pick of 2 rounds:

  • Agent Smith Free Games feature - choose this and you’ll be awarded 8 free spins. As the feature progresses, more and more Agent Smith symbols are added to the reels, improving your chances of landing a big combination.
  • Nebuchadnezzar Free Games feature - an unlimited number of free spins are awarded here. Look out for the special spider-like sentinel wilds which lock in place when they land. If the portal lands, all of the locked wilds are removed from the reels. The feature continues until there are 6 locked wilds on the reels.

As you’d expect, The Matrix is a pretty slick affair as far as design goes. The visual aesthetic is very much in keeping with the original film and it looks terrific. The range of features isn’t especially wide but they deliver plenty of action, especially the free spins rounds.

Many film adaptations are a little disappointing when compared to the original film. Despite the absence of Neo (Keanu Reeves), this slot game version of The Matrix impresses and is well worth a look whether or not you’ve taken the Red Pill. If you like movie inspired slot games, Playtech offers you plenty with Top Gun recommended.
